Historical Background?The Browning M3 is the high-rate-of-fire aircraft derivative of John M. Browning’s immortal .50 BMG design, optimized for fixed-wing and helicopter gunship use. Developed in 1942 as the AN/M3, it doubled the cyclic rate of the ground M2HB (from ~500 to 1,100–1,200 rpm) through a lighter bolt, heavier barrel jacket, and boosted recoil spring. Adopted across WWII U.S. fighters (P-51, P-47, P-38), bombers (B-17, B-29), and early jets, the M3 delivered devastating strafing power and remained standard armament into the Korean War on F-86 Sabres and helicopter door guns.
