AK9I’s 8-week Patrol & Detector Dog Handler course is an intensive, 320-hour program designed to prepare students to work effectively as canine handlers in patrol and detection environments.

Students receive academic and hands-on instruction in canine safety, health care, grooming, kenneling, transportation, conditioning principles, and safe handling practices for explosives and narcotics. The course builds a strong foundation in obedience, including core commands, heel work, obstacle navigation, and the practical use of operant conditioning and positive reinforcement.

Detection training focuses on odor recognition, search patterns, passive response, and practical searches in buildings, vehicles, warehouses, stadiums, offices, open areas, parcels, and luggage. Students also learn how trained canine teams may be used in bomb-threat response and other detection assignments.

Patrol instruction includes bite work, grip development, pursuit and apprehension techniques, handler protection, prisoner escorts, recalls, outs, vehicle-related scenarios, tracking, and trailing. The program emphasizes developing the handler’s ability to read canine behavior, safely control the dog, apply training principles, and perform effectively as part of a working canine team.
