The Army is developing a cannon capable of firing hypervelocity projectiles for air defense with the Multidomain Artillery Cannon system. The prototype will be based on the canceled Extended Range Cannon Artillery, or ERCA, system but is intended for air defense purposes.
The ERCA system was canceled, and the Army is pursuing more readily available capabilities. The Army is testing a new hypervelocity projectile and a multifunction precision radar for surveillance and high-speed round tracking.
The Strategic Capabilities Office has made modifications to components of the ERCA system to overcome technological issues. The Army aims to have a prototype battery deployed to soldiers by FY27 and hold an operational assessment by FY28.
Developing a defensive cannon system will provide flexibility in employing air defense capabilities and relieve pressure on expensive air defense units. The focus is on adapting existing technology and capabilities to enhance air defense in an operationally relevant environment.
