The Space Force is transitioning its space domain awareness satellite programs to a new cloud-based ground system with the help of a consortium of small, commercial firms to modernize satellite operations. 20 small businesses were awarded initial contracts worth $1 billion over the next five to seven years, including companies like Aalyria, Infinity, and Omni Federal. The program aims to develop a more resilient, capable ground operations system.

R2C2 builds on previous Space Force ground programs and focuses on developing a system for dynamic space operations. The program aims to field working ground systems ahead of satellites and releases new capabilities regularly. The program has achieved several milestones, including receiving authority to operate for its commercial cloud capability within the first three months.

The Space RCO is working with its vendors to acclimate them to the program’s requirements and plans to start issuing delivery orders soon. The focus over the next year is to scale capabilities to integrate satellites in the spring timeframe. Eventually, the program will focus on partnering with new programs and aligning schedules for integration activities.
